PRESS CONFERENCE

AWAMI BHARAT

PRESS CONFERENCE

Marathi Patrakar Sangh, Azad Maidan, CST, Mumbai
June 18, 2008 (Wednesday), 3-4pm
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the light of arrest of Ramesh Gadkari & Mangesh Nikam for terror activities both who have been active members of the Hindu Janjagriti Samiti & the Sanatan Sanstha, we reiterate our demand for the government to constitute an Independent Commission of Inquiry to Investigate all the acts of terrorism that have been perpetrated on our country.

We also request the media to strictly refrain from using the terms "Hindu Terrorist" & "Muslim Terrorist" as it tars entire communities of millions of people, who then live with a guilt of which they have no part. We appeal to all concerned to abjure from using these terminologies as it is also counter-productive for our larger struggle. The policy should be to simply name the organizations or individuals concerned as neither Hinduism or Islam or any other religion for that matter preach violence.

The fact that the terror investigations of the last three years have lead us nowhere also basically means that our security agencies have failed only because they have been pursuing a preconcieved path and have looked into only one possibility. This has only led to the widespread demonization of the Muslim community and the rise of Islamophobia as well.

It has been clear especially since the Nanded blasts of April 2006 that there were other terror networks that are operational as well as lethal, but they were not being given the attention due to them either by the government, the security establishment or the media.

Since the last few years, Awami Bharat has consistently put forth its analysis in the public domain and we have offered a coherent hyothesis that seeks to explain the "politics of terrorism in the age of Imperialism". Basically the "politics of terror" has replaced the "politics of communal riots" and this is a key part of our discourse if we are to deconstruct this diabolical phenomenon.

Terrorism has now arisen as the political and social challenge of our times and therefore it is imperative that we strive to undertstand the International context and the specific agencies as well the forces within our country that are at the root of the terror. We believe that primarily there are three networks that are operational and all of these need to be investigated if we are to live in an India and a world free of terror.

We will discuss all of the above issues and length and we request you to depute your reporter and photographer to cover the proceedings.

In Solidarity
